The reason a cigar stinks sometimes when smoked is the result of Tobacco not being properly fermented. Wine like tobacco needs to be fermented to convert grape juice sugar into alcohol, and like tobacco needs heat. The cigar will stink when smoked because the tobacco was not fermented properly. When this happens the cigar will burn ammonium nitrate which occurs naturally in the leaf. Heat is added to dissolve the ammonium, and is what I refer to as "sweating the tobacco". If the sweating process is flawed, the cigar will be harsh and will leave a very unpleasant order, and there's nothing worse than smelling a bad cigar.
