The wall street movement now in day 25 that started on September 17 2011 has captured the world, and has stretched throughout America in over 70 cities. Coincidentally, I happen to work near the protest area which is located by the World Trade center, and the two gentlemen allowed me to take their picture. Inspired by the Egyptian Tahrir Square uprising and the Spanish acampadas, these demonstrations in New York City are based in Zuccotti Park, formerly "Liberty Plaza Park" protesting against social and economic inequality, economic reform, improved health care, student loans, affordable housing, and all other disparities between the rich and the poor, the "haves" and the "have nots". Unfortunately, in the Boston area hundreds of police in full riot gear brutally attacked Occupy Boston, which had peacefully gathered on the Rose Kennedy Greenway. This act or invasion violated the right of the people to peaceful assembly in public spaces. Prior to this, The NYPD has also had a few clashes with the protesters in NYC. For example a female teacher's aid was pepper sprayed by a NYC police officer, and mass arrest occurred on the Brooklyn Bridge. On October 7, protesters attempting to march on
Wall Street on Wednesday were blocked by NYC police officers. This excessive show of police force against the marchers escalated with a few clashes that led to a dozen arrest. Overall, it is evident that the protest is aimed at opposing injustice, to stand up against greed and corruption, and that change is possible. The United federation of teachers and other unions joined the protest. President of UFT said, " we have to tax the rich, we have to close the loopholes and we need to hold the financial institutions accountable".
